On October 14, 2022, I took a drive toward the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon and came across this remarkable stand of aspen trees near the canyon’s highest point. It’s uncommon to see aspens displaying both vibrant yellow and deep orange together, making the scene especially memorable. While aspens are best known for turning brilliant yellow in autumn, some trees shift toward orange when higher levels of pigments called carotenoids and anthocyanins develop in the leaves, often influenced by sunlight, temperature, and seasonal stress.
