In January 2010, during the Sundance Film Festival, the anonymous street artist Banksy quietly appeared in Utah to promote his documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. While in the area, several of his works showed up overnight in Salt Lake City and Park City, surprising locals and drawing immediate attention. This Banksy piece shows him playfully altering the original quote by covering the author’s name and replacing it with his own, turning the billboard into a mix of humor, appropriation, and signature street commentary. 

This Banksy piece stands out because it isn’t his typical style of work. Instead of using detailed stencils or symbolic imagery, he took an existing billboard quote, painted over the original author’s name, and replaced it with his own. That kind of direct, text-based intervention is much simpler and more playful than what he’s usually known for.

Most of Banksy’s work relies on strong visuals and layered meaning, but here he leans into humor and appropriation, almost like a quick street-level joke. By inserting his name into someone else’s quote, he blurs the line between authorship and vandalism, making the piece feel more like a clever tag than a fully realized stencil artwork. I captured this photo on January 3, 2010 right before the billboard design was removed.
