The silhouette of Mount Timpanogos is one of the most recognizable mountain profiles in the American West. Rising above the Wasatch Range, the ridgeline forms the shape of a woman lying on her back—head, arms, and flowing dress—often called the “Sleeping Squaw.” According to legend from the Ute people, the mountain represents a princess who sacrificed herself for love and peace. In the story, Princess Timpanogos fell deeply in love with a warrior from a rival tribe. Their relationship brought tension between the two peoples, and conflict threatened to erupt. To restore harmony and end the fighting, the princess climbed high into the mountains and gave her life. The Great Spirit honored her sacrifice by turning her into the mountain itself, where she would watch over and protect the valley forever.
