Near Swan Valley, Idaho, the South Fork of the Snake River is not fully braided but does show some braided characteristics. Just below Palisades Dam it flows as a single, controlled channel, then gradually spreads into a wider floodplain with side channels, gravel bars, and islands. Because the river is regulated and its banks are more stable and vegetated, these channels tend to be more consistent and defined, making the river better described as a multi-channel or anabranching system.
