The Short Tunnel is one of two road tunnels along the historic Zion–Mount Carmel Highway in Zion National Park. Located east of the much longer Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel, it passes through a narrow sandstone rock spur and provides a brief but memorable transition between Zion’s sweeping slickrock landscape and the winding scenic highway. Constructed in 1930 as part of the original highway project, the tunnel was carefully integrated into the surrounding terrain, reflecting the early National Park Service goal of creating roads that complemented rather than overwhelmed the natural landscape. Though far less famous than Zion’s 1.1-mile tunnel, the Short Tunnel remains an important feature of the park’s historic roadway and adds another dramatic moment to the drive through eastern Zion.
